Happiness is a place
Is Bhutan really the mythical, mystical nation seen as last remaining Shangri-La where its people live in permanent happiness?
Since 1971, the country has rejected GDP - gross national product (how much money it makes) as the way to measure progress. In its place, it has inspired the world with a new approach to development, which measures prosperity through Gross National Happiness (GNH).
The belief that well being should take preference over material growth has been odd for a long while. But now, in a world assaulted by collapsing financial systems, inequity and environmental destruction, the tiny Bhutan's approach is attracting a lot of interest.
