Dhaka's small pleasures

Back when I had just started my now defunct academic career, my office was next to the one of a old professor. Up there in age, with no ambitions left to fulfill, a nagging wife to come home to, he did not have much enjoyment left in his life. The highlight of his daily routine was savoring the coffee improved with a heavy shot of cheap cognac.

"Life's small pleasures, young man, life's small pleasures. Make sure you enjoy them."

Fast forward 20 years and here I am in Dhaka. Dhaka is not Paris or London. The entertainment options are not unlimited by any stretch of imagination. People are looking forward to a handful of events throughout the year. Glitter Ball, a huge drunken, Halloween type of party, thrown by the Aussies at the Radisson Hotel , is probably the most popular. Tickets go on sale months before and sell out in a matter of minutes. Everybody is there, from the foreign diplomats to the international school teachers and the private sector expats. Every table has a theme and the preparation and time going into making the experience a success can sometime be excruciating.

We were the KISS rock band, completed with the groupies and the security personal. We had the Demon, the Star Child, the Space Man and of course, the Cat Man! Partying like rock stars! It's been a while since I had so much fun!

Life's small pleasures, Dhaka's small pleasures!!!!
