Last weekend we had the honor to meet one of the original Mukti Bahini (freedom fighter), the Bangladeshi pilot Shamsul Alam.
Mr Alam escaped from Pakistan and joined the Liberation War. The Indians wanted to help, but did not have unlimited resources, so all he was given to fly was old Otter airplane. The Bangladeshis retrofitted it to carry rockets and made holes in it for dropping bombs from inside. Mr Alam carried out an impossible mission, to bomb the Pak oil supply in Chittagong. He flew very close to the surface to avoid the Paki radars and managed to find the target with no navigation system in the plane. After dropping the 24 rockets and bombs, the most daring attack by a Bangladeshi pilot inside of East Pakistani became history.
Respect, Mr Alam!
