Rajshahi: The Land Of Mangoes

Mention Rajshahi and this will bring to mind the sight of orchards, bearing thousands of luscious mangoes. The heavenly fruit is nothing less than a symbol of the district itself.

From Langda to Fazlee there are over 30 varieties of mangoes including the gigantic Sukurkand (weighing in at around 6 kilograms), the ‘Jora Aam’, a merger of two mangoes, giving it a very distinctive appearance, resembling the shape of a human heart. The mango is one of the most delicious fruits of the world and is rightly designated as the 'king of fruits'. The ripe fruit is peeled and the pulp is eaten as such. Green fruits are often put into curries or 'dal' for extra taste.

Mangoes and Rajshahi are seemingly interlinked and with the diversity in its varieties, mangoes are a matter of great pride to residents of Rajshahi.
And returning without at least a basket full of mangoes from a visit to Rajshahi during the summer would seem to define the ‘unthinkable’. We did not dare to offend the district, therefore we loaded up on 160 kilos altogether! Plus some bananas.
