No blog about Dhaka would be complete if you did not mention the buses. My first impression about them was that they were something out of Mad Max, the old Mel Gibson movie.
They literally look like they have been pieced together out of the wreckage of other buses. It is a regular sight to see passengers riding on the roof of public buses in Dhaka. One definitely wonders how these passengers manage to get on the roof given the absence of any ladders on the bus! A myriad of cargo ranging from construction supplies to gleaming Biriyani pots are also often carried on the roofs.
I am being told the buses DO have stops, but I personally have not seen one so far. That is not to say they do not exist! What I always witness is some guy hanging on the stairs. His role is to loudly shout something (I am assuming directions) as well as helping embark and disembark in such way that the bus does not have to stop. Typical Bdesh efficiency!!!
